Zoom Fatigue
Hello! Since many people are working from home these days, and doing a few zoom calls a day, it was only a matter of time before zoom fatigue started to creep in to our daily lives. But what is zoom fatigue? I think it is feeling like you are never able to relax or your mind is unable to turn off during the day. Even between calls there is a feeling of anxiety and needing to prepare for the next call, and this can culminate in a lack of focus, a feeling of stress and tension headaches.
So how to combat the zoom fatigue – here are some possible ways to help make the day easier for your mind and body.
1) Recess anyone? Remember how happy we were to go out to the playground between classes in school when we were young? Well it seems that it may still be a good idea not just for the body but also for our souls. While we all want to get as much work done as we can during the day it may be beneficial to try to build in 10-15 breaks between calls. During this time walk away from the computer, close your eyes, and sit in a relaxing chair. Other things that may help: enjoy a cup of tea, walk outside in nature, and just be quiet (short breathing exercises) and rest your vocal chords.
2) Get away from all screens. Though we may think that checking email and the news is a nice way to get our minds off work, studies suggest getting a break from all social media may be key. If possible, take one day away from your screens, and see if that resets your mind and body. It’s also nice to focus on family, your home and the outside world for a change. Screens can wait – your soul can’t.
3) Switch it up! I read recently that changing your meetings to include conference calls can be a nice break, from screen time. Your clients and team, might also agree. Sometimes it’s nice to be more casual and to just focus on what is being said, and not how you look during meetings. Large meetings might also be a great time to turn off your video and just pay attention to the speaker.
4) Yours eyes might need a break too. Video can reek havoc on our eyes, due to eye strain. You can combat this by looking at things near and far periodically, making the text bigger on your screen and reducing the glare from your monitor.
