Hello Everyone,
The latest job statistics for 2022 our out and they are really interesting. Did you know that only 20% of applicants get to the first round of interviews? What this means is, that for every interview you get, you beat out 6 other candidates!
Now there are a lot of blog posts out there about what to do in online interviews. Well today I'm flipping that on it's head and telling you what not to do so that you can walk away from your interview with your next great job!
Don't Be Late! Just like an "in-person interview", be early. Now I know some people say it's not great to be too early for an online interview - but I think 8 minutes is a good amount time to be in the waiting room. Take the time to breath, relax and take a couple of sips of water. Remember this is about you looking professional. And that's all that matters.
Not Practicing With the Technology Beforehand. You have a lot to think about before an interview, don't let technology be one of the things that throws you. Practice, practice, practice. Especially if you are new to Zoom and don't use it a lot in your current role. There are a lot of great Zoom tutorials out there if you are unsure of how to do the basics on Zoom. Some interviews are asking for a presentation along with the interview. Practice the presentation at least 4 times, along with sharing your screen, and make sure your presentation images aren't blurry. (Important side note: Close as many windows as you can prior to the interview- so you only have to click on one tab for your presentation)
Choosing the Wrong Outfit. You should be aware of the company's dress code and also what looks good online prior to your meeting. For an interview I would opt for dressier attire even if the company has a casual dress code. This subliminally tells the interviewers that you respect them and the interview process. Keep jewelry to a minimum, so that it doesn't distract from your message.
Interviewing in a Messy Space: If you can, try to interview in a calm, quiet room where you won't be interrupted. If that isn't possible and you are using your bedroom or another space that doesn't have great optics, think about investing in a Zoom background. Amazon and Etsy have a lot to choose from. Don't use a backdrop where you are a small person in large grass or floating in space. Be you in a normal background that looks like a room.
Bad Habits That Distract From the Interview: I know interviews are nerve wracking, but just because you are online, doesn't mean you aren't visible. Things to avoid: hair twirling, checking your phone, slurping your drink, and using your hands a lot. Because all eyes are on you in these moments, distracting body language tends to be heightened over Zoom. Do your best to sit calmly and project an air of being present and engaged.
Lastly An Interview is a Conversation: When we interview it can feel as if the panel asks you a question, you answer it. You ask the panel a question and then they answer it. Rinse and repeat. To stop this merry-go-round, try to remember that this is a conversation. Both sides are trying to get information. Some things to think about are: practicing being present and actively listening to the speaker. Nod your head and show that you're taking in what they are saying. Have your upper body be active with good posture to show that you are engaged. By doing this you are showing soft skills to the person you are interviewing with, and it also shows that you are an empathetic listener too!
I hope this was helpful and want to wish you a successful next Zoom interview!!
