I know people are hungry to find ways to make themselves look great on zoom calls. Here are a couple of different ideas that I think everyone can use to make themselves shine in their next Facebook Live Event.
1) So often we forget about lighting when we are online. Lighting is so important. People want to see you! Here are a couple of good ideas. Make sure where you are in the room is well lit. If not, either move lamps or invest in a good ring light. They are all over Amazon! Cube lights are great as well. Or go near a window – natural light is the best!! This will help your viewers take in what you are saying.
2) Think about investing in a good little camera. Sometimes the camera that comes with the computer isn’t as kind as we would like. There are a number of great small cameras that you can attach easily to your laptop that will help you present your best self.
3) What are you wearing? Stay away from dark colors – especially black. Some people even advise to stay away from white – but I think white can be flattering if it is the right shade on you. Look at your background. Are the walls, light or dark? I would try wearing the opposite color to your walls, example: dark walls, go with a light top. Light walls go with a darker color. And by the way jewel tones look great on most people. But stay away from bold prints and go with a small pattern whenever possible.
4) Speaking of backgrounds you can always use a background from zoom if your home is messy or your loved ones are likely to walk thru your zoom ‘set’. And if you want to showcase your home, tidy up a bit. You want to be the focus, not your left over dinner plate!
5) A few other thoughts: Stay away from bold jewelry it can be distracting sound-wise, next to a mic. Put on a little makeup – people want to see your best self. And most importantly remember to smile, smiling is inviting to the listener. We forget that our faces and mannerisms are amplified online.
Smile, breathe and focus on the other speakers. Remember we can see you!
