MFA Audition Thoughts

Happy Tuesday!

I recently read this quote and thought it would be a great reminder for those that are thinking about auditioning next year for MFA programs.

The quote that appeared in Backstage was: Please treat your audition like a performance. What that means is: practice, practice, practice. If that means engaging a coach to help guide you with your selection of material, and with help around blocking and beats, please do so. If getting into the school of your choice is important to you and the life you want to create – think about the following steps so that you can shine on your big day:

· Calendarize your audition rehearsals: if your rehearsals are on the calendar, they are more likely to happen. You may also want to let someone know your goals around rehearsing – i.e., find an accountability partner to make sure you do the work so that you can be your best self on your big day.

· Engage a coach to help guide you with, blocking, monologue choices, beats, and objectives. It’s also great to have someone with an objective eye, who can guide you to make strong decisions when auditioning.

· Have more than 2 monologues prepared! Some schools may want to see more of your range – think about having 5 monologues at the ready – even though they are only asking for two.

· Be prepared to speak to the auditors after the auditions. Some are interested in engaging with you – think about what you want to say and why you are interested in going to that particular school.

· Lastly, be yourself. In the words of Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” Never forget that you are amazing.
