Are you warming up before your next online presentation?

People are always asking me how to get ready for a zoom call, Facebook Live event, Tiktok video or online interview….and my answer over the years has become, “Did you warm up?”

When I say this people seem to look at me strangely not understanding.

But here’s the deal: many people feel that their total preparation for getting ready to present is: memorization, sitting where the lighting is good, having a nice background for their zoom call, and wearing the right top.

Many of us forget that one of the most important thing to prepping for our big online or in person moment is warming up our voice and bodies.

Most sports figures, on-air presenters, actors, voice over talents and Ted Talkers know how important it is too warm up the instrument before getting ready to use it for long periods of time.

Your mind and body needs to be ready to speak before others. If your instrument isn’t ready then you could be giving a subpar performance.

Here are some benefits to warming up;

Improved Circulation – Most of us are doing online presentations while sitting for long periods of time. When you warm-up. your energy is flowing through your body – not stopping in one area.

Getting Rid of Tension - You have found out what areas are holding tension and have released that tension prior to starting, making way for a more relaxed and present speech.

Connecting to your breath – When you warm up - don’t forget to check your breathing. Are you breathing high and are your shoulders going up and down, rather than breathing in your belly with your diaphragm going in and out? Grounded breathing not only helps the body it helps the mind.

Vocally – You have done vocal warmups that engage your tongue, mouth and face. Doing warmups with your vocal cords increases blood flow and can reduce hoarseness that in turn leads to vocal fatigue.

Mind – You have taken a moment to be present with yourself and in turn with your colleagues, so that you can really answer their questions and concerns and come up with new ideas to move your company forward.
